The selection of programmes offered in English:

„LIVING HISTORY“ AT THE PULGA FARM

The programme of „Living history“ takes you back in time – to the North-Estonian farm of the end of the 19th century, with people living their everyday lives, doing their everyday things.

The authenticity of the programme has been paid much attention to – participants wear clothing and accessories appropriate for the era, use tools and foodstuffs that were common in that era and for the people of Estonia. The guests can participate in the work of the farm family – they can try to card wool and spin thread, braid a garter or help to do the laundry and mangle like people used to in the old days.

As the programme is in Estonian, foreign guests are helped out by an interpreter-museum guide who interprets and explains what is happening in the farmyard and buildings.

Price of the programme as agreed, depending on the content and length of the event and cost of materials.

(ca 11 500.-)

FOLK DANCE, SONG AND GAME GROUP LEIGARID

Leigarid are dancing, singing and playing instruments just like people used to in the past, being as close as possible to the real Estonian folklore. A 45-minute performance consists of songs, dances and cheerful singing games supported by energetic pieces of music.

At the end of the concert, Leigarid have a tradition of inviting guests to the dance circle as well, to dance together and share the joy of dancing with everybody!

ESTONIAN BEAUTY

Presentation of national costumes in a chamber- music style!

An impressive programme, in which dances and music alternate with short explanatory passages, introduces one of the most characteristic symbols of Estonia – the Estonian national costume.
For an attentive observer a national costume is like an open book - you can see garments decorated with magical signs intended to protect the wearer from bad luck. Every single detail of the garment, jewelry, and stripe of fabric pattern hints at the life history of a particular person and reflects his/her current social status.
In front of an audience the dancer in a simple linen shirt / chemise is step by step being dressed in a festive national costume. The process is accompanied by explanations and music.

BEAUTIFUL ESTONIAN HANDICRAFT

  • Braiding of ribbons
Wedding ribbons, garters, headbands, decorative ribbons.
Estonians have known how to braid ribbons for various occasions and special events from time immemorial, skilfully braiding their symbol into every ribbon and also adding magic, the patterns of which formed of the harmony of black, white, red, blue, yellow and other colours. At weddings, the ribbons were used to decorate both beer tanks and bagpipes; decorative ribbon was attached to the edge of a shawl and also bound to an oak as a sacrifice, if necessary.
  • Making of straw dolls and straw crowns
Making of straw crowns and straw dolls is a very old tradition in Estonia. Namely, it was believed that crowns hung in the ceiling protect the home from bad spirits and evil eyes. Dolls bring happiness and wealth to a farm. Crowns were made for Christmas, New Year’s Eve, Boxing Day, Eastern, weddings and christenings. All this to decorate the rooms, bring wealth to the house and protect one’s home.
  • How to card wool and spin thread?
Carding of wool and spinning of thread were among the most common indoor women’s works on cold and dark autumn and winter nights. Gatherings for working were often organised. It was common for a woman to throw a spinning wheel over the shoulder and go to the neighbours. When chatting and humming a song, work proceeded faster. It was like this only a hundred years ago and in some places probably today as well.
  • Blacksmithing (forging of a nail in the old smithy)
  • Making of paper
  • Felting

NOTE! If you wish, you can make yourself a keepsake at the guidance of a handicraft master, either a national garter or decorative ribbon or a straw doll or straw crown protecting the home.
Price 1500.- / 2000.- one handicraft master (cost of material will be added).
