Rural Architecture & Landscapes

At the beginning of 2007 an extensive national programme for the study and maintenance of rural architecture and rural landscapes was launched, which is mainly implemented by the Estonian Open Air Museum and its eager assistants.

In the 20th century some quick changes and dramatic events have taken place, which have endangered the preservation of our traditional farm architecture and rural landscapes. Three radical land reforms have swept over Estonia. Yet, it is not always that changes are related to political situation only. It is unavoidable that new ways of living and production also bring along the modification of material environment.

With this programme we endeavour to increase people’s consciousness, teach traditional building methods and find out how much of the old and valuable we have actually preserved. Our aim is not to focus on the building only, but rather the traditional village landscape in its entirety, thereby following the processes which determine the changes occurring due to human activity or inactivity.
